Those concrete blocks; Easter

The schoolyard was hot, sprinkled with huge concrete blocks before fields took over, and distance. The kids hung around these blocks; on them, under them, against them. Perhaps there was someone who knew what they were for but it's best not to know sometimes, for suddenly the abstract becomes just another torn out chunk of loneliness.
In this country the sun was baking and Aaron found it strange to have that holiday feeling in the middle of termtime. He spat and wiped the glob into the asphalt with his sneaker. There was no winning, no joy.
